The Freelon Group is a sixty member architectural firm located in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. Founded in 1990 by Philip G. Freelon, FAIA, the firm offers specialized design expertise in the areas of Museum/Cultural Center, Higher Education and Science/Technology facilities. Our building designs have received numerous awards including twenty-seven American Institute of Architects (AIA) regional, state, and local design awards. In 2008 The Freelon Group was recognized by Contract Magazine as The Designer of the Year. Our firm is also the recipient of the AIA North Carolina Outstanding Firm Award in recognition of outstanding service and design excellence.
Our Mission Statement speaks to the delivery of innovative and inspiring design through collaboration and the stewardship of our environment. Building on this philosophy, we have consciously focused our design energy toward clients and projects that ultimately serve the greater good of the community. This commitment has led us toward certain projects and deliberately away from others. Accordingly, our work focuses on research and education, the advancement of understanding between disparate cultures, and the creative expression of the arts.
Our firm has recently delivered successful museum projects on both coasts including the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture in Baltimore. We are currently working on cultural facilities in Washington, DC and Charlotte, NC. Education, science and technology clients include Yale University and the multiple campuses in the University of North Carolina system.
