Timothy (Tim) F. Winstead | AIA, LEED AP

Principal, Director of Science and Technology

Tim Winstead is a native of North Carolina. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture in 1981 and took a position with McKimmon/Edwards/Hitch Architects. He returned to North Carolina State University two years later to receive his Bachelor of Architecture degree. After graduation, he worked for Reg Narmour - The Architectural Group, CHR Associates and O'Brien Atkins, where he met Philip Freelon. Tim left North Carolina for Princeton, New Jersey in 1992 to work for The Hillier Group, at the time the 4th largest architectural firm in the United States.

While with Hillier, Tim became a Principal and established an expertise in the programming, planning and design of Science and Technology based facilities. As the firm's lead programmer and planner for many years, Tim was involved in a wide range of projects. His experience ranges from a worldwide Master Plan for SmithKline Beecham's R&D facilities to small lab renovations for secondary schools. One of Tim's major projects was the development of the Science Hill Planning Study for Yale University. The project included the creation of a master plan outlining $500 million worth of renovation and new construction for all of the science facilities located on Science Hill. Tim continues to be involved with the implementation of this plan and has been working with Yale since 1993. Tim's other academic clients include the University of Connecticut, Duke University, Fayetteville State University, Hartwick College, The Lawrenceville School, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University, SUNY Albany, Temple University and the University of Tulsa. Tim's corporate laboratory clients include Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, DuPont Pharmaceuticals, Merial Ltd., and Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals.

As one of the leading programmers and planners for lab facilities in the country, Tim has been actively involved in Project Kaleidoscope and has spoken on the subject at numerous Tradelines, SCUP, ISPE and Agile Planner conferences.

While serving in his capacity as lead programmer and planner, Tim began several projects with The Freelon Group. It was during this time that Tim realized that he was better suited to a smaller firm where he could be more intimately involved with his projects. He joined The Freelon Group as a Principal in January of 2002. Since that time, Tim has not only been involved with all of the Science and Technology related projects for the firm, but also has served as the Principal in Charge of the $110 million Central Region Psychiatric Hospital, the firm's largest project to date. Over the years, Tim's projects have been recognized by his peers winning several AIA design awards, in addition to earning a Special Mention in R&D Magazine's Lab of the Year.
