Richard W. Kuhn | AIA
Design Principal
As a Principal and Lead Designer with The Freelon Group, Richard brings over 25 years of outstanding accomplishments to the firm. Richard's award-winning design portfolio ranges from museum and cultural institutions to large-scale mixed-use urban projects. Within his portfolio are the recent AIA award winning projects James C. Renick School of Education at NC A&T State University (2005 AIA Charlotte Honor Award, 2005 AIA NC Merit Award) and the Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise Facility at NC Central University (2006 AIA NC Honor Award). Among his international design awards and honors is the 2003 and 2004 AIA Design of Excellence Awards for the Montreal Administrative & Cultural Arts Complex in Montreal, Canada, and the 2002 AIA NJ Design of Excellence Award for the Glaxo Smith Kline high-rise corporate headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Richard is a strong advocate of collaborative design who fully-participates in the design efforts from the pre-design and conceptual phases through project close-out. While leading projects at the firm, his role is to ensure that the needs and concerns of clients are reflected in a powerful architectural vision.
Richard received his Master of Architecture degree at Harvard University in 1987 and Bachelor of Design Degree from the University of Florida. As a young designer, he accepted a position at Richard Meier & Partners, Architects in Los Angeles as an Architectural Designer for the Getty Arts Complex. Following his experience with Richard Meier & Partners, Richard spent 15 years as a lead designer with a number of prominent national architectural firms where he designed numerous projects throughout the US, Europe, and Asia.
