The Freelon Group is a fifty person architectural firm located in Durham, North Carolina. We are committed to the delivery of innovative and inspiring design through collaboration and stewardship of the environment. Building on this philosophy, our firm has consciously directed our design energy toward clients and projects that ultimately serve the greater good of the community. Accordingly, our work focuses on research and education, health and well-being, the advancement of understanding between disparate cultures, and the creative expression of the arts.

Founded in 1990 by Philip G. Freelon, FAIA, the firm has built a solid reputation for its skillful integration of appropriate technologies and design excellence. Timothy F. Winstead, AIA, joined Freelon in 2002 contributing expertise in programming and planning, most notably in the science and technology arena. While leading the firm into its third decade of practice, Phil and Tim have become nationally recognized experts in museum, higher education and science/technology planning and design.

The Freelon Group has received 38 American Institute of Architects (AIA) design awards at the national, regional, state and local levels. Freelon is the recipient of AIA North Carolina's Outstanding Firm Award and was recognized by Contract Magazine as The Designer of the Year in 2008. Our firm also received the AIA Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture in 2009.

Freelon has completed major museum projects in San Francisco, Baltimore, Charlotte and Greensboro, NC. Current commissions include new museums in Washington, DC and Atlanta. Our education and science/technology clients include Yale University, MIT, Morgan State, South Carolina State, and multiple campuses in the University of North Carolina system. We are also designing three behavioral healthcare facilities for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the Durham County (NC) Health and Human Services Complex.
