The Freelon Group took part in 7th Annual Triangle 2005 CANstruction® competition at Exploris Museum which combines a creative design/build competition with a charitable way to help fight the war on hunger. Teams, led by architects and engineers, showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely out of canned foods. At the close of the exhibitions all of the food used in the structures is donated to local food banks for distribution. This year Exploris hosted the event for ten teams hoping to create the most spectacular sculpture using only non-perishable food.
"Dorothy's Ruby Red Slippers" by The Freelon Group won Honorable Mention. Their giant sculpture was constructed out of 1,000 Hunt's diced tomato cans and 1,000 Old El Paso bean cans. Dorothy clicked her heals three times and she was transported back to the place she called home. There is no place like home, but for many North Carolina citizens and natural disaster victims the only home they have is the warm meal that they receive through the Food Bank of North Carolina. The Freelon Group and CANstruction ® 2005 are helping to make that home more readily available through the spirit of competition and donation. The exhibit is open to the public from October 29, 2005 through January 8, 2006. View the 2005 Freelon Sculpture
