Smithsonian Institution
Programming of the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC)
Washington, DC
Freelon Bond, an association of The Freelon Group and Davis Brody Bond, was selected to provide
pre-design and programming phase services for the new National Museum of African American of History
and Culture which will be located on the Mall in Washington, DC. The new museum, one of the
Smithsonian Institution’s national museums, is projected to cost $300-400 million and will be
built on a five-acre site adjacent to the Washington Monument and across from the National Museum
of American History. The building will be the first national “green” museum in the United States
and the last structure built on the National Mall.
National Center for Rhythm and Blues
Philadelphia, PA
The Freelon Group was recently selected to design the new 70,000 SF National Center for Rhythm & Blues to be located on Broad Street positioned at the gateway to Philadelphia’s “Avenue of the Arts”. Through exhibits, performances and educational programs, The National Center for Rhythm & Blues will preserve the legacy, honor the pioneers, interpret the socio-cultural impact and foster the continuing evolution of Rhythm & Blues music. The estimated project budget is $80 million.
Morgan State University - Center for Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies
Baltimore, MD
The Freelon Group, in association with CSD Architects of Baltimore, MD, was selected to design the new 124,370 GSF Center for the Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies facility. This new Facility will support the institutional and research programs of Morgan State University that address the physical aspects of the urban environment, including the Institute of Architecture and Planning, the Department of Civil Engineering and the Institute of Transportation Studies. The project team will apply sustainable design standards that will target a minimum of LEED Silver Rating from the United States Green Building Council's Green Building Rating System and meet sustainable design standards approved by the State of Maryland. The estimated total project budget is $54 million.
D. C. Public Library Tenley-Friendship and Anacostia Neighborhood Libraries
Washington, DC
The Freelon Group in association with R. McGhee and Associates, a local DC firm, was selected to design two new 18,000-20,000 SF branch libraries in the Tenley-Friendship and Anacostia Neighborhoods. The District of Columbia Public Library system (DCPL) is transforming the entire system through innovative new library design, sustainable design practices, and a plan that outlines a vision for the new DCPL system. The new libraries will be designed to enhance and reflect the communities in which they are built while exploring new innovations in building design and technology. The design of the libraries will attract and engage residents, encourage learning and provide centers of community activity in the areas they serve. The estimated project budgets for the Tenley-Friendship and Anacostia branches are estimated at $15 million and $16 million, respectively.
North Carolina A&T State University - General Academic Classroom Building
Greensboro, NC
The new NC A&T General Academic Classroom Building is comprised of approximately 72,000 GSF of programmed space. The new state-of-the-art facility will be home to new multi-disciplinary academic classrooms designed to meet the ever-growing need for instructional, laboratory and faculty departments. This multi-use facility will be the sixth building designed by Freelon on the A&T Campus. The estimated total project budget is $26 million.
South Carolina State University - Engineering and Computer Science Building
Orangeburg, SC
The Freelon Group has partnered with the South Carolina-based firm of McMillan Smith & Partners to design the new 100,000 SF Engineering and Computer Science Complex on the campus of South Carolina state University in Orangeburg, SC. The new complex will include classroom and laboratory spaces for the College of Science, Mathematics & Engineering Technology. Several science and technology academic departments will be housed in the complex: Mathematics, Computer Science, Civil Engineering & Civil Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering & Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering & Industrial Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering & Mechanical Engineering Technology, Nuclear Engineering and Industrial Technology & Industrial Technology Education. The estimated construction budget is $23 million.
