An historic opportunity – the planning and design for the new National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) – is finally in sight. We are pleased to announce the teaming of our two architecture firms, The Freelon Group and Davis Brody Bond, in a joint affiliation to pursue the NMAAHC design commission.  Freelon/Bond is a dream come true for us. We have admired each others’ work and have enjoyed a longtime personal and professional relationship.

The collective strengths of this historic collaboration include:

• Unparalleled experience planning, programming and designing African American themed Museums including the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Martin Luther King Center, Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture, Museum of the African Diaspora, and Studio Museum of Harlem

• Max Bond, FAIA, considered the dean of African American designers and described by Ebony as “one of today’s top architects,” working side-by-side with Phil Freelon, FAIA, described by Metropolis Magazine as “the go-to architect for African American cultural commissions”

• A total collaboration with an integrated design team comprised of staff from both Davis Brody Bond and The Freelon Group

As the final museum built on the National Mall, the NMAAHC will be a national cultural treasure for future generations of Americans. We believe Freelon/Bond presents a powerful, passionate and experienced design team of the caliber required to realize the full promise and potential of the NMAAHC.
