The Julius L. Chambers Biomedical Biotechnology Research Institute (BBRI) represents a landmark building for North Carolina Central University. It is the first building on campus devoted solely to research. The building houses an animal facility, research labs, faculty offices, administrative offices, and a one hundred seat auditorium.
Established to enhance the research and training capabilities of North Carolina Central University in the biomedical sciences, the BBRI serves both the university and research community at large. Located seven miles from the Research Triangle Park, the BBRI operates in partnership with other area universities (Duke, NC State University, UNC-Chapel Hill) and major corporations such as GlaxoSmithKline. The basic elements of the brick and metal panel building are arranged along a simple double-loaded corridor with laboratory and support spaces organized on the south side. Research labs are located on the west side of the building to take advantage of natural light and views. The central corridor opens into a two-story lobby which reinforces the separation of research elements from administrative and instructional areas.
