The non-profit organization, Sit-In Movement, Inc. purchased the F.W. Woolworth Building in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina and has put in motion its vision to preserve the Art Deco style exterior and renovate the interior to house the new International Civil Rights Center and Museum. This project will include the renovation of three levels to accommodate the Cultural Center and Museum including the historic lunch counter where the first sit-in took place. There will be exhibits in the main exhibition hall, as well as in numerous other areas throughout the building, chronicling the struggle for civil rights in America and throughout the world. The facility will also include an auditorium where lectures, classes and events such as an annual speaker series can be held.
The project location is the F. W. Woolworth building at 134 S. Elm Street, Greensboro, NC. The existing building is three levels (basement, first floor, second floor) and a roof top penthouse room. The building is estimated to be 43,379 gross square feet (gsf) total.
