The Stone Center supports a variety of programs including the Institute for African-American Research and Upward Bound, along with various student activities including dance, theater and student publications. The new building houses an art gallery, Hall of Fame, a 400-seat theater, a multi-purpose room, a library, and other support spaces.
The building is designed as a pavilion in the woods, respecting nearby traditional campus architecture while establishing its own unique identity. It consists of two parts - the cylindrical, 400-seat auditorium on the south side and a masonry bar that houses the programs of the Stone Center. These components are connected by a glass element that serves as a pre-function area for the auditorium. The north side of the building facing the woods contains gallery space that provides an area for exhibits and circulation through the building. This multi-function space offers exceptional views of the wooded area and north campus beyond. The open gallery space will be illuminated at night to further emphasize the pavilion-like nature of the design.
